Maury has been selected for an important project funded by DC’s Department of Energy and Environment (DOEE) and administered by the American Bird Conservancy and its local partner, City Wildlife.
Many of you are aware that the glass connector between Maury’s original brick building and our new addition has suffered a number of fatal bird strikes since its completion in 2019. The birds hit this glass because it acts as a mirror during certain times of day, reflecting the trees and sky. Birds don’t see glass, so they think they can fly through it to the sky, but instead they crash at full speed into the glass.
Through this grant, DOEE will pay the cost to have all the glass that faces Constitution Avenue in this connector treated with a retrofit product called Feather Friendly that is expected to reduce bird collisions by 85–95%. Maury’s project will be installed by Window Film Depot, a qualified and experienced contractor.
Installation is currently in progress. We look forward to a completed project soon!
