Maury Space Camp

To Infinity and Beyond: Space Camp 2019

Space Camp is a capstone experience tradition for Maury 5th graders. It is a three-day trip to the U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama, at the end of the school year where students learn about STEM and space mission history, do space simulations, and even complete a realistic space mission.
Past students have said about Space Camp:

“We got to do fun activities and simulators while we also learned about space and space history! It was a great experience.”

“One thing Space Camp taught me was kindness. The only way our team was successful was through kindness and working as a team.”

“Every day is a new adventure! You never know what the day will bring and each day was more fun than the one before!”

“Space Camp is a unique experience that you don’t find anywhere else.”

“In Space Camp, there is more than having fun. It’s learning and having confidence to go BIG and stay far away from small.”

“Space Camp is boring—said no one ever!”

“The challenges we faces at Space Camp made us more confident in ourselves.”

“Space Camp opens and creates futures for bright minds.”

While an incredible learning and community-building experience, Space Camp is also expensive—in the ballpark of $1,000 per student and not funded or supplemented by the PTA (or Maury fundraisers such as the Yard Sale and Maury at the Market). As such, 5th grade families are asked to make a several hundred dollar contribution for their student and then charged with fundraising to make up the difference in the total cost of the trip (almost $15,000 this year). It is important to note, that these fundraising efforts ensure that every 5th grade student has the opportunity to attend Space Camp regardless of family ability to pay the suggested contribution.

As such, 5th grade parents and students, as they have in years past, are planning a slate of fun fundraising events for the Maury community. Below is a schedule of major events with dates and times. Please mark your calendars and thanks in advance for supporting them by attending. If you would like to support Space Camp fundraising in other ways, we welcome your help as an event volunteer or as a contributor of in-kind donations for supplies (such as pizza or crafts for babysitting nights, prizes for Fall Festival games, use of your popcorn machine or DJ equipment, etc.). Please contact clapp.christine@gmail.com to volunteer or donate supplies for an event.
