Hello, Maury Family! I am so thrilled to be joining your staff and community as the reading specialist for SY 2015. My name is MaryEllen Macek and I was born and raised in Worcester, Massachusetts (and have strong New England pride). I attended public school for grades PK through 12, enjoying diverse, challenging, and rich experiences. I attended Villanova University in Villanova, Pennsylvania and participated in various activities including playing field hockey, tutoring students with and without disabilities, and volunteering with Habitat for Humanity. I graduated in 2008 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in History and in Political Science.
My journey to Washington, DC began after graduation when I enrolled at The George Washington University to study Early Childhood Special Education; at the same time, I began my teaching career as a Special Education Teacher at Murch ES. Most recently, I have been a special education teacher at Hyde-Addison ES, working with students and teachers in grades PK through 5. In 2014, I completed my Education Specialist certificate in Educational Leadership and Administration with a focus on Special Education, also from the GWU.
In my spare time, I enjoy all of the activities and resources offered to me as a Washingtonian. I am an avid baseball and football fan, enjoying the Nationals and the Redskins as much as my beloved Red Sox and Patriots. I enjoy spending time outside, whether I am playing co-ed softball on the National Mall, hiking the Billy Goat Trail in Maryland, or reading on any beach. I love to visit exhibits at the Smithsonian Museums, with the Air and Space Museum, the Museum of American History, and the Portrait Gallery being my favorites.
I so look forward to meeting each and everyone of you next school year!
Enjoy the last few weeks of school and have a wonderful summer!
