The Creative Curriculum® for Preschool

The curriculum addresses all areas of development: social/emotional, physical, cognitive and language. It also guides our teachers on how to address content in: literacy, math, science, social studies, arts and technology. Creative Curriculum® classrooms are organized into multiple interest areas that offer children the opportunity to explore, discover and grow. Maury was recently selected as a pilot program for the Creative Curriculum® Gold Assessment.

Readers and Writers Workshop from Columbia University

In writing workshops, Maury students observe their lives and the world around them to draft, revise and publish narrative and expository texts. In reading workshops, students are taught the strategies and habits of effective reading. They learn to talk, think and write about their reading to live enriched, literate lives.

Singapore Math

Singapore Math devotes more time to fewer topics to ensure that children master the material through detailed instruction, questions, problem solving, and visual and hands-on aids like blocks, cards and bar charts. The process gives students a solid math foundation upon which to build increasingly complex skills, and makes it less likely that they will forget and have to be re-taught the same concept in later years. This program, currently available to all Kindergarten and First Grade students at Maury, is often the math curriculum taught in gifted programs and at exclusive schools like Sidwell Friends.

Think Tank

The Think Tank is a place where children complete rich projects and solve problems across broad content areas, including through the use of technology. The Inquiry Based Learning Lab offers hands-on problem solving opportunities that foster critical thinking and higher-order questioning. This type of program is typically found in exclusive private schools and is the only one on Capitol Hill, thanks to a family-supported fundraising effort.
